The Experience

Before You Go

Go early or late

Book a morning or late-afternoon safari—the animals are more active and heat haze is reduced for better viewing and photos.

Keep your distance from elephants

Never leave the jeep near large or lone elephants; follow your guide’s instructions to stay safe and avoid disturbing animals.

Bring good optics

A pair of mid- to high-power binoculars or a 200mm+ lens lets you identify birds and observe elephants without encroaching on their space.

Carry water and sun protection

There are no services inside the park—bring at least 1–2 liters, sunscreen and a hat to avoid heat fatigue.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Elephant Transit Home nearby—visit earlier or later in the day to see rescued calves (separate visit).
  • Reservoir shoreline viewpoints at dusk for concentrated birdlife and silhouettes of grazing elephants.

Wildlife

  • Sri Lankan elephant
  • Sambar deer

Conservation Note

The park is active in elephant rescue and rehabilitation; visitors should follow low-impact practices—no feeding, no littering, and maintain distance to minimize stress on animals.

Udawalawe was designated in 1972 to protect wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir and to conserve elephant habitat in the dry-zone lowlands.

Common Questions

How long is the safari?

This experience runs about three hours; morning (around 06:00) and afternoon (around 15:00) departures are typical.

Will I definitely see elephants?

Udawalawe has a high probability of elephant sightings, but wildlife is never guaranteed—your guide maximizes odds by using recent sightings and animal behavior.

Can I get out of the jeep to photograph animals?

Guides will sometimes allow short, guided walks for birds or small wildlife, but you should remain in the vehicle near large animals—especially lone bulls—for safety.

Is this suitable for children and seniors?

Yes; the tour is considered easy and family-friendly, though those with cardiovascular issues should consult the provider and avoid midday heat.
