The Experience

Before You Go

Book early morning slots

Wildlife is most active at dawn—schedule the earliest tour available to increase elephant and bird sightings.

Bring binoculars and a mid-telephoto lens

Open plains give long sightlines; 200–300mm range helps capture behaviors without approaching animals.

Stay inside the jeep

For safety and conservation, remain seated and keep limbs inside the vehicle unless your guide instructs otherwise.

Hydrate and protect from sun

Temperatures rise fast; carry sunscreen, a wide-brim hat and drink water provided by the operator.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Elephant Transit Home near the park—observe rehabilitation work and calf releases at scheduled times
  • Reservoir viewpoint west of the main roads for late-afternoon light and wide panoramas of birds and water buffalo

Wildlife

  • Water buffalo

Conservation Note

The Elephant Transit Home and park management use controlled tourism to fund rescue and rehabilitation; visitors should follow rules to minimize disturbance and never feed wildlife.

The park was designated in 1972 to protect wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir and to safeguard the reservoir’s catchment.
