The Experience

Before You Go

Arrive early for check-in

Plan to be at the Red Hook retail store 15–20 minutes before departure to complete paperwork and gear fitting.

Use reef-safe sunscreen

Apply reef-safe sunscreen before boarding to protect reefs; reapply with a towel between swims if needed.

Know your swim comfort level

If you tire easily, tell the crew—tethers or near-boat rests are usually available at snorkel sites.

Save alcohol until after swimming

Alcohol is served after snorkeling for safety—stay hydrated with water before entering the water.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Hidden beach access points near Cruz Bay with old sugar-plantation ruins on shore
  • Small, sheltered coral bommies accessible at low tide that often host juvenile reef fish

Wildlife

  • Colorful parrotfish and glassy squirrelfish

Conservation Note

Operators follow park rules: no touching coral or feeding wildlife; visitors are encouraged to use reef-safe sunscreen and pack out trash to reduce impact.

Virgin Islands National Park was created in 1956 to protect the islands’ reef systems, beaches and historical plantation sites that reflect colonial-era sugar production.
