The Experience

Before You Go

Time your visit for the dry season

Visit between August and October to see large congregations of elephants gathering at the tank when water is scarce elsewhere.

Bring binoculars and a zoom lens

Much of the park’s birdlife and smaller mammals are best observed through optics from the jeep; a 200–300mm lens is useful for photography.

Keep a respectful distance

Follow the driver/tracker’s instructions — elephants can be unpredictable; remain in the vehicle unless instructed otherwise.

Hydrate and protect against sun and insects

Carry water, sunscreen, and insect repellent—the open jeep and scrubby grasslands offer little shade and mosquitoes at dusk.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Drive the tank shoreline at low light—shorebirds and waders feed close to shallow edges before dawn and after dusk.
  • Ask your tracker about nearby abandoned cultivation patches where axis deer feed; these areas are quieter and often yield close sightings.

Wildlife

  • Sri Lankan elephant
  • Axis deer (including rare albino individuals)

Conservation Note

Seasonal water management and community agriculture affect wildlife movements; staying on tracks, minimizing noise and respecting viewing distances helps reduce disturbance.

The Kaudulla tank is part of a network of ancient irrigation works expanded under King Mahasena in the 3rd century AD; these reservoirs shaped settlement and agriculture for centuries.

Common Questions

How long is the safari?

The scheduled duration is about three hours (180 minutes) and typically runs as a single morning or afternoon game drive.

Will I be picked up from my hotel?

Many operators include free pickup/drop-off within a 5 km radius of the park gate; confirm the pickup point when booking.

What wildlife am I likely to see?

Elephants are the main draw, especially in the late dry season; you may also see axis deer (including occasional albino individuals), waterbirds and other dry-zone mammals.

Is the terrain rough or suitable for children?

The safari uses a 4x4 vehicle over uneven tracks; it’s family-friendly but not recommended for people with serious cardiovascular conditions due to vehicle movement and open-air exposure.
