The Experience

Before You Go

Time your drives for golden hours

Early morning and late afternoon drives concentrate wildlife activity and softer light for photography.

Bring binoculars with a mid-range zoom

200–400m visibility from roads is common; binoculars help pick out distant animals at pans and hides.

Respect viewing distances

Stay in the vehicle unless at designated hides—approaching wildlife stresses animals and can be dangerous.

Pack water and sun protection

A hat, sunscreen, and at least 2L of water per person per day keeps you comfortable in arid conditions.

Conservation Note

Park management uses permanent waterholes and regulated roads to balance tourism with wildlife needs—stick to roads and follow guide instructions to reduce impact.

Etosha’s name refers to the vast pale salt pan that dominates the reserve; protected as a wildlife area since the early 1900s, it has long been central to regional conservation efforts.
