The Experience

Before You Go

Go early for bird activity

Start at first light when waders, flamingos and raptors are most active and temperatures are cooler.

Bring optics and a long lens

Binoculars and a 300mm+ lens make distant birds and skittish shorebirds visible through glare from the water.

Stay inside the vehicle

Wildlife viewing is safe and responsible only from the jeep; stepping out can disturb nests and trigger aggressive behavior.

Hydrate and sun-protect

Shade is limited on flats—carry water, sunscreen and a wide-brim hat to avoid heat exposure.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Salt pan vantage points that catch sunrise colors and concentrate shorebirds
  • Nearby Kirinda fishing village for low-key coastal views and local seafood stalls

Wildlife

  • Greater flamingo
  • Estuarine (saltwater) crocodile

Conservation Note

The park’s low-lying wetlands are sensitive to coastal development and pollution; stick to paths and support guides who follow park regulations to reduce disturbance.

Bundala was protected as a sanctuary in 1969, upgraded to a national park in 1993 and named Sri Lanka’s first Ramsar wetland and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2005.
